Best new Audis coming soon

Audi is set to launch new model after new model over the coming years, and here’s what we know about them so far

Audi has decided to scrap its plan to rename much of its established car line-up so that electric cars all wear even numbers and combustion-engine cars odd ones. While the U-turn is welcome, it’s happening at a busy time, as the German brand is launching several all-new pure-electric models plus a number of next-generation versions of its long-serving cars.

Thankfully, we can help clear things up and tell you about all the new Audi models we know are coming soon to a showroom near you.

Audi A5

As a result of that bewildering naming strategy, the latest generation of Audi’s combustion-powered compact executive saloon and estate – meaning its rival to the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class – couldn’t be called the A4. It therefore took on the Audi A5 moniker.

There’s the Sportback-style A5 Saloon or a more practical A5 Avant estate. Engine options range from a 148bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol to a 364bhp 3.0-litre V6 petrol in the much sportier S5 and an e-hybrid plug-in hybrid option. Standard kit on every model includes an 11.9-inch ‘Virtual Cockpit’ driver’s display, 14.5-inch central touchscreen, three-zone climate control, leather upholstery and adaptive cruise control. Prices start from £41,950.

Audi A6

Audi A6 saloon - front action

Until Audi backtracked on its naming strategy, the replacement for the outgoing, combustion-powered Audi A6 executive saloon and estate was going to be the new A7. However, that’s not happening anymore, and instead the BMW 5 Series rival and Mercedes E-Class rival will be sticking with the Audi A6 name. Under the bonnet is likely to be a range of hybrid-assisted engines. We’ll find out more soon, as the new model will be unveiled in March.

Audi A6 e-tron

Audi A6 e-tron - front cornering

The sleek A6 e-tron is Audi’s all-electric response to the BMW i5, and (like the A5) is available as a coupé-inspired Sportback saloon or a good old-fashioned Avant family estate car. The A6 e-tron uses the new Premium Platform Electric (PPE): a bespoke EV architecture which has been co-developed with Porsche, and means the new Audi shares a considerable amount with the new Porsche Macan Electric.

The A6 e-tron (both saloon and Avant versions) is available with a 75.8kWh and 94.9kWh battery, plus single or dual-motor powertrains. The larger battery is good for up to 463 miles of range, depending on the bodystyle, while the S6 is packing two motors for 542bhp, quattro all-wheel drive and a 0-62mph time of 3.9 seconds. Prices start from £62,500 – more than £5,000 less than the BMW i5.

Audi Q3

Audi Q3 testing - front 3/4

The arrival of a new Audi Q3 is just around the corner, and once again it’ll be taking on long-standing premium family car rivals the BMW X1, Mercedes GLA and MINI Countryman. We’ve spotted prototypes out and about testing, giving us a glimpse of the new, more aggressive design that appears to have borrowed some elements from the latest Q5 and all-electric Q6 e-tron, such as the individual pixel-like segments in the headlights.

The new Q3 will be one of the last models Audi launches with an internal-combustion engine. The line-up should include both petrol and diesel options, likely with mild-hybrid assistance, plus the Volkswagen Group’s latest plug-in hybrid powertrain already in use by the latest Volkswagen Tiguan and new Cupra Terramar. We know this set-up can produce up to 268bhp, and offers more than 70 miles of pure-electric driving range, so company car drivers are sure to take a particular interest in the PHEV version.

Audi Q5

The third-generation Audi Q5 aims to build on the massive success of its predecessor, with a fresh new look, tech-filled interior and engine options. The ‘Digital Stage’ dashboard design includes an 11.9-inch Virtual Cockpit and 14.5-inch central touchscreen in one curved panel, plus a separate 10.9-inch display for the passenger. The premium mid-size SUV is currently available with mild-hybrid petrol and diesel engines, and there’s a fiery SQ5 model with 362bhp too. Prices start from £49,950.
