Firestone Roadhawk 2 review

The first podium position goes to another impressive new tyre. The Firestone scored a number of wins on its way to a clear third place, topping the tables in both aquaplaning tests and in cabin noise, too, and coupling them with generally strong results elsewhere. 

Straight-line wet braking was one of its weaker disciplines – it was fifth, 2.1 metres off the pace – but it was stronger in wet cornering and third in wet handling, just a fraction behind the Pirelli. It demonstrated a good character, blending good turn-in with a mild and useful agility and strong traction, and strengthened its wet-weather credentials with those leading aquaplaning results, which saw it finish clear of the second-placed Nokian in both tests.

In the dry it wasn’t as impressive, but it was still decent. It was seventh in the straight-line braking, but less than 2.5 metres off the best, while it was equal fourth over the dry handling circuit. It wasn’t the quietest when digging for grip or the sharpest steering, but it was neat, stable and effective. Over our mix of surfaces it was the quietest tyre, according to the noise meter, and it was third in the rolling resistance test to cap a solid performance.
