2019 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV prices and specs revealed

Mitsubishi has announced prices for its 2019 model year Outlander PHEV, with figures kicking off from £34,255

Mitsubishi has announced full pricing and specs for the 2019 model year Outlander PHEV. Available to order now, Europe's best selling plug-in hybrid vehicle since 2015 starts from £34,255 in Juro trim, once the government’s £2,500 plug-in car grant has been taken into account.

Standard equipment includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, a pre-heating function, heated seats and keyless entry and go. The PHEV 4h costs £37,000, and gets LED headlights, leather interior, a surround-view camera, blind spot warning and rear-cross traffic alert. The top-spec 4hs adds extra high tech safety gear, including adaptive cruise control, forward collision mitigation, lane departure warning, and front and rear parking sensors.

The 2019 Outlander PHEV gains an overhauled hybrid system. The 2.0-litre petrol has been replaced with a more torquey, more efficient 2.4-litre Atkinson cycle unit. Put simply, that last part means the engine has a different compression stroke compared to a traditional unleaded engine in order to increase economy – a common technique in modern hybrids. This is combined with a more powerful rear electric motor and generator unit to improve performance and fuel economy.

The result is that the Outlander PHEV is claimed to achieve 139mpg on the latest, more stringent WLTP testing procedure. On the old testing system, it makes 159.5mpg - that’s a 2.6mpg improvement on the previous model. Official CO2 emissions figures now stand at 46g/km on WLTP, and the electric only range - boosted by a 15 per cent increase in battery capacity - stands at 28 miles.

Beyond the technical headlines, the Outlander PHEV gets a larger rear spoiler, new 18-inch alloy wheel design and very minor tweaks to the front grille.

Inside, Mitsubishi has added quilted leather, more comfortable seats, a revised instrument panel and a couple of buttons have moved around for a new Sport driving mode.
