Alex Ingram

Alex joined Auto Express as staff writer in early 2018, helping out with news, drives, features, and the occasional sports report. Since then, he moved across to the world of YourTube as our Video Content Producer before his current role as Chief reviewer. That sees him head up our road test team, which gives readers the full lowdown on our comparison tests.

Following a brief stint writing about tech for Haymarket Media, Alex then moved into his real passion of automotive. His car writing career kicked off at carwow in 2014, where he eventually became a script writer, researcher, and regular drag-race competitor on its YouTube channel.

Alex says…

As a kid, Auto Express was the first car magazine I’d ever subscribed to, so seeing my name in print and online for the first time for a brand whose words I took as automotive gospel in my youth was a proud moment. My Chief Reviewer role is the perfect place for me to do what I enjoy most: driving cars. Few people in the industry have an opportunity to sample the quantity and variety I do week-in, week-out; I can hop from a high-end Mercedes-AMG into a cheap and cheerful Dacia Sandero from one week to the next. This breadth of experience helps me to put context into every Auto Express review, and judge each on the qualities that matter for both knowledgeable regular readers and prospective car buyers alike.

Alex Ingram Q&A…

Q: What was your first car?

My first car was a 2002 Renault Clio. Its sporty-looking Dynamique spec and black paint made me think that, at a glance, I could be driving the hot Clio 172. The 74bhp, 1.2-litre 16-valve engine poured cold water over that fantasy soon enough.

Q: What is your dream car?

This varies from week to week, but at the time of writing, I’m going to go with a Citroen SM - possibly the coolest car ever created. I also wouldn’t say no to a Ferrari F40, though. Or maybe a 250 GT Lusso. This question is too hard. Next!

Q: If you could change one thing about cars, driving or the car industry today what would it be?

Cars are getting too big, too heavy and often needlessly complex. We need more simple, light and - crucially - more compact cars, not fewer - especially in urban areas. I believe that EVs very much play a part in that, but an improved charging infrastructure needs to be in place so buyers have the confidence to live with more efficient electric cars with more modest battery capacities.
