Aston Martin V12 Vantage

2009 to date: Upping the power takes coupé to a whole new level

Just in case the V8 Vantage isn’t fast enough for you, Aston Martin also fits its most potent engine to its entry-level model. The V12 version started life as a behind-the-scenes project, but became a fully fledged production car.

With the firm’s 6.0-litre V12 shoehorned under the bonnet, performance is explosive, and the Vantage can sprint from 0-62mph in a shade over four seconds. It’s a car that needs to be treated with respect, though, as on anything but the driest and smoothest roads, the thumping 570Nm of torque can see the rear wheels struggle for traction.

Feed the power in gently, however, and the acceleration and noise build ferociously as the revs increase. Press the sport button and both get even sharper and louder.

The V12 weighs an extra 100kg over the V8 powerplant, but the extensive use of carbon fibre and other lightweight materials means the car is only 50kg heavier than its less powerful sibling.

As a result, it doesn’t feel as nose-heavy as you’d expect. And with direct steering, great body control and carbon-ceramic brakes, you soon learn to trust the chassis. Body revisions over the V8 include a carbon fibre rear diffuser, bonnet louvers and side sills that reduce rear-end lift.

Inside, the car follows the same basic architecture as its smaller-engined brother, but has a feast of upgrades that include Alcantara and carbon fibre trim.

Not many firms would consider shoe-horning their biggest engine into their smallest car, but that’s the kind of attitude we expect from Aston. And as a car built by enthusiasts for enthusiasts, the Vantage V12 deserves a place in any keen driver’s wish list.
