VW Tiguan Bluemotion

Popular 4x4 will soon be available in low-emission form

Here's proof that Volkswagen's Bluemotion range is spreading its wings – this is a new low-emission version of the popular Tiguan SUV.

Caught undergoing testing in Sweden, the prototype looks like a regular Tiguan at first glance, but look closer and you can see a rather obvious giveaway – a Bluemotion badge. That signifies a host of CO2-reducing technology including a revised engine management system for the 1.6-litre TDI diesel engine, longer gear ratios and tweaked aerodynamics to reduce drag.

These changes will help the Tiguan return 50mpg and emit less than 140g/km of CO2. This model also boasts a subtly facelifted interior with a new climate control system and instrument panel. The finished article will also get a new steering wheel like the Golf VI, the Golf Plus, Passat CC and the brand-new Polo. Expect sales to start before the end of the year.
