Which one?

• Rear space is tight and there’s provision for only two people, so practicality is limited.• With the roof up, rear visibility is poor. Parking sensors were optional across the range, but are essential.• Bodyshell rigidity can be an issue, so high-mileage cars are likely to suffer from creaks.

There are no duff engines, but some are better than others. The 1.8 and 2.0 TFSI petrols are punchy, refined and efficient; the 1.6 feels lacklustre in comparison. The 1.6 and 2.0 TDI diesels are good, too, but the 1.9 TDI isn’t as refined.

This was also the only version to come with a five-speed manual box; all other engines got a six-ratio manual with an S tronic dual-clutch option. Audi isn’t generous with its standard equipment, so pin down exactly what features any potential purchase has; cruise control and Bluetooth weren’t always standard, for example.

Recalls

There have been five recalls for the second-generation A3, but only two have specifically affected the Cabriolet. The first, issued in December 2009, concerned cars fitted with the DSG transmission. The problem centred on the clutch opening up, leading to a loss of drive. A software update was all that was needed, though, and the issue has been resolved on 139 of the 143 cars affected.

The other recall, in December 2011, focused on fuel leaks on 104 2.0 TDIs. So far, Audi has fixed 97 of these.

Driver Power

Our viewThe regular A3 came a lowly 110th in our Driver Power 2013 satisfaction survey, having peaked at 23 in 2008. Owners criticise the firm ride, limited practicality, high running costs and lack of comfort, although it was rated for performance.
