8. Vauxhall Adam

Vauxhall Adam

Watch out, MINI. The Vauxhall Adam is taking the fight to the big-selling premium small car by offering buyers seemingly endless customisation options in a cute and cool city car package.

It’s sold only as a three-door, with a choice of Jam, Glam and Slam trim levels. All come well equipped, with even the entry-level car getting DAB radio, air-con, Bluetooth, cruise control and alloy wheels. Whichever you go for, the excellent IntelliLink infotainment system is a must-have extra. It lets you link your smartphone to the car to play music or download apps like sat-nav, and it works brilliantly.

There’s a choice of a 69bhp 1.2-litre engine and a 1.4 with 86bhp or 99bhp, but none is especially efficient. None delivers fuel consumption over 60mpg or emissions below 100g/km for free road tax. Also disappointing is the practicality on offer, with the tiny 170-litre boot growing to a maximum of only 484 litres. And the rear seats don’t provide much passenger space when they are in place.

Even so, the Adam looks set to sell well, with its neat looks inside and out and decent-value price.
