Large SUV of the Year 2023: Skoda Kodiaq

The Skoda Kodiaq is the Auto Express 2023 Large SUV of the Year with the Kia Sorento and Nissan X-Trail commended

Skoda has become something of an SUV specialist, so it’s no surprise that its flagship Kodiaq wins for the second year running. Its blend of practicality, value and sharp driving dynamics lift it clear of the pack.

At the heart of the Kodiaq’s appeal is its spacious and versatile interior, which is available with seven seats. It’s also packed with lots of Skoda’s ‘Simply Clever’ details, such umbrellas stored in the front doors, a double-decker glovebox and an ice-scraper behind the fuel-filler door. Then there’s the boot, which will swallow 765 litres of luggage in five-seat mode and 270 litres with all three rows in use.

This utility comes with a dose of upmarket appeal courtesy of high-grade materials, slick screens and top-notch build quality. This impression is reinforced on the road, where the Skoda matches more expensive models for comfort and hushed refinement. But because it’s based on the versatile MQB platform, the Kodiaq feels far more agile and engaging than its imposing exterior dimensions would suggest. There’s even a four-wheel-drive option for those wanting all-weather security.

There are no electrified powertrains, but the petrol and diesels deliver punchy performance, even when the car is carrying seven and all their clobber. Aerodynamic efficiency was improved as part of a facelift last year, enhancing fuel economy.

If you want to cash in on Skoda’s trademark value-for-money reputation, then well equipped SE Drive trim with the brand’s punchy 1.5 TSI petrol engine is your best bet. Skoda is offering a £1,500 contribution, so with a £4,000 deposit, you’ll be looking at £489 a month over three years.

Commended

Kia Sorento

With its imposing looks, spacious seven-seat cabin, surprisingly upmarket feel and state-of-the-art tech, the Sorento is four-wheeled proof that Kia has completely shaken off its bargain- basement roots. It’s smooth and sophisticated to drive, plus for company-car drivers it has the added benefit of a plug-in hybrid option.

Nissan X-Trail

As with the Skoda and Kia, the Nissan blends seven-seat versatility with premium appeal. It also comes crammed with the firm’s active safety aids and a 12.3-inch infotainment screen. A highlight is the Nissan’s e-Power hybrid motor, which delivers EV smoothness and performance without the range anxiety.
