Zagato AGTZ Twin Tail harks back to the Alpine 220’s motorsport heyday

Zagato’s latest creation is based on an Alpine A110 and costs well over half a million pounds

Legendary car design and coachbuilding firm Zagato has unveiled its new project - the AGTZ Twin Tail. It pays homage to the Alpine A220 from the 1960s, taking an Alpine A110 as a base and giving it a comprehensive restyle.

Zagato calls the Alpine A220 a “forgotten Le Mans icon”. The V8-powered A220 was built from 1968 to compete at the famous endurance race, but was largely unsuccessful in its circuit-racing endeavours. In the 1970s, 30cm was taken out of its body length to transform it into a rally car, where it was much more successful — although not quite as successful as the 1973 World Rally Championship-winning A110.

Based on the current Alpine A110, the AGTZ Twin Tail has an elongated rear made from carbon fibre to make it 622mm longer than the standard car. That extended section is actually removable, to go with the Twin Tail’s “One car. Two Souls” tagline.

The AGTZ Twin Tail is much more than some carbon slapped onto the back of an A110 however. Each body panel is bespoke to the Zagato with a completely new design of front wing, bumper, headlights, and a side air intake repositioned lower down in honour of the original car’s. Even the wing mirrors have been reprofiled for the Twin Tail. The wheels look to have been inspired by the mismatched set of the ones from the A110 R Alonso Edition, but they’re new too. Zagato’s traditional double-bubble roofline has also appeared.

There’s no word on powertrain changes for the Twin Tail but at the very least we would expect the more powerful version of the A110’s 1.8-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine with 296bhp. It's not known how the new bodywork will affect the car’s top speed either, which currently stands at 177mph in A110 R form.

We do know how much the Twin Tail will cost, however. It starts from €650,000 before taxes, roughly £556,000. Exclusivity is assured, as you’d expect, with just 19 models planned. Zagato says the AGTZ Twin Tail will make its full public debut at Lake Como in May 2024 ahead of expected customer deliveries from October 2024.
