New 2017 Jeep Compass: engine details announced

Jeep reveals further details of the Compass - their rival for the Volkswagen Tiguan - at the 2016 LA Motor Show

Jeep has revealed fresh details about its upcoming Compass, which will sit above the Renegade as a rival to the VW Tiguan, including more information on powertrains and technology.

Worldwide customers will be offered a choice of five engines, though the selection will vary between markets. Three petrol and two diesel engines have been confirmed, as well as three gearboxes.

The entry-level petrol engine will be a 1.4-litre MultiAir 2 turbo – the same 138bhp unit found in the new Jeep’s smaller sibling, the Renegade.

Jeep hasn’t specified exactly which engines we’ll get in the UK, but the 1.4-litre is the most likely to appear. It’ll be available with the choice of three gearboxes – a six-speed manual will be standard on 4x2 models with the option of a six-speed automatic, while 4x4 models will get a nine-speed auto box.

Other global options include a 2.0-litre Tigershark unit, as well as a 2.4-litre MultiAir 2 confirmed for the US market.

Jeep’s two diesels are the 1.6-litre MultiJet with a six-speed manual and 4x2 drivetrain, as well as 2.0-litre MultiJet. The latter will be available as a 4x4 model with the nine-speed gearbox, though cheaper 4x2 versions will go on sale as well.

The standard infotainment screen will be five inches large, though a seven-inch display and a larger 8.4 inch one will be available too.

The larger options feature touchscreen interfaces with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto built in, and the 8.4 inch option also offers multi-touch gesture support so you can pinch, tap and swipe on it just like a smartphone.

Jeep will offer the Compass in four different trim levels – Sport, Limited, Latitude and Trailhawk.

Trailhawk models will get Jeep’s enhanced permanent 4x4 setup with a five-mode terrain selection system including Rock Mode, hill descent control, and a low range setting. It’ll also get unique bumpers with improved approach and departure angles, skid plates, toe hooks, plus a slightly raised ride height.

The Compass will be built in Jeep's new plant in Pernambuco, Brazil. The Brazilian price is the equivalent of around $30,000, but we'll have to wait for UK specific pricing.
