Three-car garage: used Range Rover, BMW 8 Series Gran Coupé and Jaguar XK for £100k

For the price of a new Mercedes S-Class, you can have a luxurious SUV, an elegant saloon and a timeless sports car

3-car garage for 100k

For more than 50 years, the Mercedes S-Class has been among the most technologically advanced and luxurious cars on the road, setting new standards for the entire motoring world, not just the upper echelon. It's a car that’s earned the right to command a £100,000 starting price, but for the same money I managed to create a similarly luxurious, and more exciting, three-car garage through the Auto Express Buy A Car service.

Range Rover - £32,500

Used Range Rover

The Range Rover is the grandfather of all luxury SUVs, and few cars come close to offering the same sense of occasion that this British icon can. The 2018 example I found has covered more than 60,000 miles, however, it features a plug-in hybrid powertrain. This would help reduce the Range Rover’s typically (and not unsurprisingly) high running costs, because it promises up to 31 miles of pure-electric driving. That’s enough to complete most people’s daily commute, plus makes driving around town a lot easier, although it’s still wonderfully refined on a motorway.

Better still, this is an almost range-topping Autobiography trim model with a long list of optional extras. It features 21-inch wheels, 24-way adjustable heated and cooled massaging seats, sliding panoramic sunroof, Meridian surround sound system, luxurious leather upholstery, quad-zone climate control, plenty of screens, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and even a fridge under the central armrest. All for less than the price of an entry-level Vauxhall Grandland.

BMW 8 Series Gran Coupé - £39,849

Used 8 Series Gran Coupe

While the S-Class is a car you’re driven around in, the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupé is for those who enjoy being behind the wheel. There’s more of a sense of drama about this long, low and wide saloon, too, yet it still looks elegant with its sharp kidney grilles and swooping roofline. The interior also feels special, with leather everywhere you look, excellent technology and loads of room for anyone in the back, plus a sizable 440-litre boot.

This is a big refined car, however, it’s also a BMW, which means it’s deeply impressive to drive, thanks to impressive body control and precise steering. The model I found may cost less than £40,000 and has covered just over 37,000 miles in five years, but under the bonnet is a 522bhp 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8. Combined with all-wheel drive, this M850i Gran Coupé will rocket from 0-62mph in less than four seconds.

Jaguar XK - £24,995

Used Jaguar XK

Completing this luxurious trio is the Jaguar XK: a stunning sports car that offers comfort, style and plenty of thrills. This one I found on Auto Express has less than 28,000 miles on the clock, yet it’s available for £15,000 less than a new VW Golf GTI. And while the Golf has to make do with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, this Jag has a 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V8 that produces 380bhp, all of which is sent to the rear wheels.

It rides well on British roads and can quietly cruise along when you want to. But make no mistake, the XK can attack corners like a proper sports car. Plus the V8 engine provides a great soundtrack, as well as a 5.2-second 0-62mph time. It’ll use a lot of petrol of course, though what do you expect? This is a Jag after all.

If this Jaguar XK is too old and you want a slightly newer sports car, then you can bag a used Jaguar F-Type from less than £30,000 through the Auto Express Buy A Car service...
