Best home wallbox chargers 2024: what do owners think?

Most electric car drivers have access to either home or workplace charging. A Department of Transport survey in 2022 found that 93 per cent charged at home, with 90 per cent doing so overnight, and there’s little evidence to suggest those figures have changed very much since.

For the vast majority relying on home charging, making the right choices when picking a home charger is crucial. And that’s where the Driver Power poll comes in, ranking a range of providers across a number of factors we consider to be most important.

At the most basic level, home chargers should all perform similarly. The limitations around power supply into the nation’s homes make 7.4kWh charging speeds the effective industry standard. So choosing one charger over another won’t affect how fast you can charge your vehicle without a domestic-supply upgrade.

Electricity tariffs are important though, because the cost of every kWh can vary significantly across each electricity supplier’s peak and off-peak rates, so do your homework. 

Off-peak rate timings are variable too, and some tariffs also give users options to charge at times when the CO2 footprint of the national grid supply is at its lowest, and/or when electricity is at its cheapest.

So ideally you want a charger and connected smartphone app that are user-friendly and intuitive, and can handle your individual preferences. That’s true whether you’re an EV driver who is keen to play with the settings to optimise cost or reduce environmental impacts, or one who wants simply to ‘set and forget’ their home charger and wake up every morning with a car that’s fully topped up and ready to go.

Of course, you want to have a home chargepoint that’s reliable and robustly built, and while it only happens once, you will definitely want an efficient and no-hassle installation. 

You’ll also like your chosen charging unit to look smart on the front of your house, and in the event that things do go wrong with the charger or you have queries, then impressive customer service is a vital element too.

1. Hypervolt

This year’s Driver Power home charging champion is Hypervolt, which secures first place on the podium with an impressive array of five category wins – and a couple of category results where it trails worryingly in seventh place. 

Build quality is arguably the most troubling of those rankings, with satisfaction falling well below the majority of the firm’s rivals here. Hypervolt also ranks seventh for ease of use, but the differences across the brands are more marginal.

The company’s biggest wins are rave reviews for its customer service and smartphone app.

2. Easee

Easee by name, but ranked third for ease of use by respondents, although by the narrowest of margins from the category leaders in this year’s Driver Power survey.

Elsewhere, our overall runner-up in the home charger stakes bags first place for build quality, second position for style, and another third spot for smooth installations. 

But after that things begin to slip a little, with customer service rated only fourth most satisfying, while satisfaction with its smartphone app is voted fifth. Reliability being only ranked seventh is seriously disappointing, though.

3. Zappi

The world’s first solar-energy-compatible home charger grabs the third step of the Driver Power home charger podium this year, but it can’t break through to the top spot in any category. 

Instead, Zappi makes do with second places for satisfaction in the reliability, build quality and installation categories, backed up by third positions for style, the brand’s smartphone app and customer service. 

Zappi’s lowest score comes in the ease of use category, where it can only manage fourth, perhaps a reflection of its added functionality.

4. Wallbox

Owner’s rank Wallbox chargers in second place for their ease of use, and there’s a matching result for the firm’s smartphone app. While those are the most satisfying aspects of life with a Wallbox, customers also award the brand respectable fourth places across four categories, namely installation, style, build quality and reliability. 

Against that, the sixth-place result for satisfaction with the company’s approach to customer service is disappointing. But in overall terms, Wallbox isn’t too far off the pace of the three podium winners above it in the table.

5. Ohme

Strong performances in the customer service satisfaction section, where it comes second, and the build quality satisfaction category, at third, can’t lift Ohme higher than fifth overall in the table. 

Indeed, in certain categories, such as reliability and style, our respondents rank their satisfaction with the company well behind the best in this survey, and it can only muster a middle-of-the-road fifth position for installation. 

Ohme does earn a fourth place for its smartphone app, however, albeit with quite a big gap to the winner in this category.

6. EO

A mixture of highs and lows mark the experience of EO owners, it seems. On the one hand, the company is rated best performer in the ease of use category, but on the other, EO nets a poor seventh place for its smartphone app, where it’s ranked some way off the best software that’s offered.

Feedback from customers is disappointing for both build quality and the installation process too, but for the latter EO is in the hands of its third-party installers. The brand scores a little better when it comes to style, reliability and customer service.

7. Pod Point

The good news first: customers rank the reliability of their Pod Point chargers close to the best, while the brand also receives middle-of-the-road rankings for ease of use and build quality, which points to the likelihood of an easy life with these units. 

Pod Point installations only come seventh overall, but it’s not far off the pace of the best in a mostly tightly bunched category. There’s a bigger gap to seventh on customer service and style though, while customers aren’t wowed by the Pod Point smartphone app either.

8. Rolec EV

With a range of options that includes what’s claimed to be the UK’s most affordable home charger, the feedback from Rolec customers suggests they may be getting what they pay for. The firm comes last in every category in our survey, although a deep dive into the rankings shows it’s more off the pace in some areas than others. 

In relative terms to the next worst-performing brand, our poll shows Rolec scores especially poorly for customer service, while satisfaction lags badly on its installation service, smartphone app performance and style.
