Ford Focus Zetec S vs rivals

The new Zetec S models turn up the heat on the Ford Focus. So is the flagship turbo the best warm hatch?

Ford Focus Zetec S vs rivals

The wait is nearly over for fast Ford fans – but if you simply can’t hold out until July for the hot new Focus ST, help is at hand in the form of the new Zetec S.

In 1.6-litre EcoBoost form, it’s the fastest and most powerful Focus in the line-up. Its turbocharged petrol engine produces 178bhp – up 30bhp on Titanium models – and the family hatch has a bold new look to go with its extra performance.

A full bodykit, 17-inch alloys and LED rear lights set the Zetec S apart, while its suspension has been specially tuned for UK roads.

It’s available with a range of lesser petrol and diesel engines, but the performance flagship tested has plenty of competition.

Buyers looking for a warmed-up family hatch are spoiled for choice. First up is the current class champ, the VW Golf. Its 1.4-litre TSI petrol engine uses a turbo and a supercharger to develop 158bhp.

If you want something even racier, look no further than the Golf’s SEAT cousin. The Leon FR+ is the priciest car here, but with loads of kit and 209bhp on tap, it will push the Focus hard in the race to the chequered flag.

Verdict

Our trio of family cars offers three very different takes on the warm-hatch formula, but which approach is the best solution for motorists who still want fun from their runabout?

The Focus Zetec S came into this contest as the favourite, thanks to Ford’s track record for producing entertaining everyday cars, and it didn’t disappoint. We’re not completely sold on the Zetec S bodykit – we think a different colour scheme would improve matters – but the Ford is still our winner. A combination of comfort, practicality and entertainment value makes it the best choice. But it was pushed all the way by the SEAT Leon.

Driving purists won’t get as much enjoyment from the Leon’s dynamics, but if you value raw performance and in-car gadgets above everything else, the FR+ is hard to beat. We also think it’s the most stylish choice.

That leaves the unconvincing VW Golf to bring up the rear. In GT trim, its understated looks and classy cabin are sure to appeal, but its firm suspension spoils comfort without delivering the kind of driving experience that you get from the Ford or SEAT.

1. Ford Focus Zetec S
In EcoBoost guise, the Zetec S is a talented all-rounder, and a welcome addition to the Focus range. We’re not big fans of the styling tweaks, but the Ford drives brilliantly. We only wish its more powerful engine was available in other models across the line-up.

2. SEAT Leon FR+
If you want a go-faster family hatch that leaves rivals trailing in its wake, this is the car for you. The Leon has the raciest character thanks to its sporty styling and punchy 2.0-litre engine. And while it’s expensive, the FR+ comes loaded with desirable features.

3. VW Golf GT
It's rare to find a Golf relegated to third place in any road test, but the 1.4 TSI GT is one of the weakest models in the range. It has the pace to match its warm-hatch billing, but it’s not as comfortable, fun or distinctive as it should be.
