First unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show back in March, the 2 Series Active Tourer was the German manufacturer’s first ever front-wheel dive model. Despite the name, the Active Tourer is no relation to the standard 2 Series Coupe, as it uses the same running gear as the new MINI.

Engines have also been borrowed from the MINI, with the entry-level 218i (£22,150) using the same 134bhp 1.5-litre three-cylinder motor. The more powerful 148bhp 2.0-litre diesel is fitted to the 218d (£24,205), with economy claimed at 68.9mpg. A short while after launch in September, BMW is set to expand the 2 Series Active Tourer lineup with the introduction of 220i, 220d and 216d models along with all-wheel drive variants.

Standard kit across the range includes an automatic tailgate, two-zone automatic air conditioning, rear parking sensors, Bluetooth with USB interface, 6.5-inch monitor, DAB digital radio, keyless go and engine start and sports multi-function leather steering wheel.

Sport models can be specced for a further £1,250 over standard SE specification and receive larger 17-inch sport alloy wheels, sport front seats, LED ambient lighting and black high-gloss trim. Luxury models – demanding a £2,000 premium – are trimmed with Dakota leather upholstery, LED ambient lighting, Chromeline exterior, wood trim and a new 17-inch alloy wheel design.
