Best off-roaders

The best 4x4s offset high running costs with practicality, luxury, comfort and more.

The winner in the off-road/SUV class could just as easily have competed in the compact family sector or even against MPVs – and it would have been victorious in those sections too!

Skoda’s Yeti is probably the most versatile model on sale in the UK today, able to turn its hand to mud-plugging, entertaining on-road driving, family ferrying and more. With a total score of 91.70% it’s only been bettered by one model in Driver Power 2011, and that was its big brother Skoda Superb.

Keeping up with the Yeti is a tough task, but Land Rover’s larger Freelander earns a well deserved second place in this class. Offering a taste of its more expensive Discovery and Range Rover sibling’s class and luxury in a more affordable package, the entry-level Land Rover is a blueprint for the modern 4x4

The third placed Honda CR-V follows a similar template to its Freelander rival, but hasn’t received quite such glowing reviews in all areas. However, the Japanese model’s 29th place in the Top 100 is respectable.

Don’t be fooled by the old-shape Freelander’s appearance in fourth position here – it has nothing to be proud of. Because there were only four off-road/SUV models included in the Top 100 this year, the 93rd placed Land Rover makes it into this class position by default.

What you said: "It has big car qualities in a compact package, My two-wheel-drive 2.0 TDI CR SE is enjoyable and refined, with a quality interior. The engine is quiet, has decent pace and returns 40-60mpg." - Yeti Driver Geoff Titchener, of West Wickham, Kent.

"It's excellent. Been wonderful in the snow. Why have a car when you can have a Land Rover?" - Land Rover Freelander Owner.
