Best family car

Our guide names the best family cars for fine driving dynamics, value and reliability.

No prizes for guessing which model is king of the family car class! With Skoda’s Superb picking up the top prize in the Top 100 it automatically scoops class honours, too.

Knocking its little brother Octavia off the top of the podium makes it a fantastic one-two for the Czech company that’s leading the way in Britain’s new car market.

That the Superb has chalked up a staggering 92.06% average score is an achievement not to be underestimated, as last year’s winning car needed only 91.16% to grab the gold medal. The message from drivers is clear – there is no better model on the UK’s roads.

Third place in the family car class represents another great result for Vauxhall. Unlike the old Vectra which has long been a regular in the bottom half of the Driver Power chart, the new Insignia is doing everything right, and owners are delighted.

Fourth position goes to the unstoppable Rover 75. Will the appeal of this British institution ever fade? If your budget won’t stretch to one of the podium placed family cars be sure to check out the superbly comfortable 75 saloon and estate on the used market.

Completing the top five is another model that’s making huge improvements over its predecessor – Renault’s latest Laguna.

What you said: "A Diesel auto was available immediately so I snapped it up. I used to own a VW Passat and Saab 9-5, but neither can match the Skoda for the money" - Superb Owner, David Tanner, Fareham.

"Excellent value for money with all the advantages of Czech engineering without the burden of badge snobbery." - Skoda Octavia Driver.
