Lego Technic 4x4 R/C Rock Crawler

Lego Rock Crawler is a satisfying challenge to build and good fun to use once you've completed it

Rock crawling is a growing craze in the world of radio-controlled cars. It sees drivers negotiating difficult terrain at low speed using special miniature four-wheel-drive machines with extra-long suspension travel. Now Lego is getting in on the act with the latest model to join its Technic range.

The Rock Crawler comes in a huge box. As usual with Lego, the blocks are split into bags for each section, so you don’t need to rifle through them all looking for the right part.

There are three full-colour A4 instruction manuals to follow, too, but each step is clear and sets out all the parts required. There are also scale drawings of certain pieces to help you. The box claims this model is suitable for ages 11-16, but even adults will find it a satisfying challenge – it took us around three nights’ work to get the truck finished.

But building the model is only half the story. The Rock Crawler uses Power Function electric motors and an infra-red remote control system, so it works just like a conventional R/C car. It has four-wheel drive, four-wheel steering, long suspension travel and a torquey electric motor.

As a result, it has plenty of power to tackle obstacles. While Lego models have a reputation for fragility, the Rock Crawler is tough, but it’s for indoors only.
