Kenwood DNX521DAB

We test Kenwood's DAB-ready twin-height stereo for VW Group cars

Kenwood DNX521DAB
Overall Auto Express rating

4.0

Just months after launching its first digital radio multimedia system, Kenwood has added DAB to its VW Group-specific all-in-one set-up. We loved the original, so were keen to try the new DNX521DAB.

Ours was fitted to a Skoda Octavia vRS, and uses the same adapter to fit the twin-height slot in the dash as before. But there is now a discreet powered and earthed aerial on the windscreen.

The system is a top performer, with strong reception on national radio stations. Local reception is more erratic, but still acceptable. It’s also easy to move between functions, store presets and update stations.

Among the other improvements, Kenwood has moved the USB to the back, so you can run a cable round into the glovebox and keep your music player stored in there. A microSD slot lets you play music or films.

As with the previous system, it integrates well with the car, letting you match the illumination of the seven-inch screen to the colour of your car and get the VW, SEAT or Skoda logo on start-up. It’ll even display climate control settings and parking sensor alerts, if your car has these features.

Also included is Bluetooth, Garmin sat-nav, a CD and DVD player, FM tuner and an iPod connection (but a lead is £35 extra), so you’ll want for nothing.

What's good?

Seamless update for ageing in-car kit, clears windscreen clutter and provides great national DAB radio reception.

What's not so good?

Local digital reception inconsistent, not cheap, iPod lead £35 extra.
