New XPeng P7 arrives in Europe and it’s gunning for Tesla
Record-breaking P7 is shown off in Munich with supercar-like performance claims
XPeng might be a fresh Chinese brand that’s barely a decade old, but it’s partly owned by Volkswagen, so it makes sense that it’s trying to conquer the European market - and the latest model in its weaponry is the new P7.
The covers came off the all-electric P7 back in May this year, and XPeng brought its new car to the Munich Motor Show for its European debut and to drum up some excitement ahead of an expected launch in 2026.
XPeng also revealed a few more technical details, claiming a supercar-like 3.7-second 0-62mph time and a top speed of 142mph. The all-important range and charging figures have been omitted thus far, although XPeng has claimed a world record for the distance travelled over 24 hours in a mass-produced EV: 2,461 miles.
We expect the P7’s 584bhp and 695Nm of torque to come from a dual-motor layout, and while more details will be revealed later, it’s all but guaranteed to build on its predecessor’s 83kWh battery and 350-odd-mile range. We can also expect the new model to move onto the company’s latest 800-volt electrical architecture, bringing greater efficiency and faster charge speeds.
Compared with the old P7, which we drove in 2023, the new car has been radically updated into a “hi-tech and AI-driven smart electric vehicle”, according to the brand. There’s certainly been a styling change: the old car’s front end has been sharpened with a slimmer full-width lightbar and more acute angles. The original P7’s curvaceous body gets a more pointed look, with the sloping roofline continuing in an unbroken line all the way to the rear deck. That sharp design continues at the back end with a jagged, Lamborghini-like bumper.
Lead Exterior Designer Rafik Ferrag said: “The original P7 was a milestone for XPeng and a turning point in China’s EV landscape. With this new generation, we set out to design a pure electric sports sedan that could amaze at every angle.”
We’ve not yet been given a glimpse inside, but XPeng calls the P7 an “athletic five-seater coupe sedan” with an “immersive smart cockpit”. The company says the car blends “AI-powered luxury” with its latest autonomous driving technology; the ambition is that the new model will “[lead] the charge into a new generation powered by AI, innovation, and ambition”. Part of this technology-driven approach will be Level 4 autonomy, which will provide full self-driving capabilities within a specific area.
Currently, the only XPeng sold in the UK is the G6 SUV – a Tesla Model Y and Audi Q4 e-tron alternative priced from around £40,000. The X9 MPV has also been confirmed for British sale, but it’s not yet clear whether the P7 will be brought here. f you’re after an electric car and you don’t want to wait for the XPeng P7, there are plenty of alternatives available through our Buy A Car service. Examples include a new Tesla Model Y starting from just £44,980 RRP or a new Polestar 4 starting from just £60,580 RRP.
XPeng’s presence in Munich will extend far beyond this year’s motor show because the brand is opening a new research centre in the German city this month. XPeng says this will enable it “to get closer to European users and ensure their needs are reflected in its future mobility innovations”.
