Volvo S90 loses petrol and diesel engines from line-up

The flagship Volvo S90 saloon is now only available with the company’s range-topping, 385bhp T8 plug-in hybrid powertrain

Volvo has restructured the S90 line-up for 2020, removing the saloon’s conventional petrol and diesel engines from sale. Now, the S90 is only available with the brand’s range-topping, T8 plug-in hybrid powertrain, in either the sporty R-Design or comfort-biased Inscription trim-levels. Prices start from £55,180 and £56,030 respectively.

The Volvo S90 T8’s powertrain comprises a 300bhp 2.0-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine, an 86bhp electric motor mounted on the rear axle and an 11.6kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The system offers a claimed 0–62mph time of 5.1 seconds, a maximum electric-only range of up to 35 miles and fuel economy figures of between 112.8mpg and 165.9mpg.

Standard equipment for the S90 includes 19-inch alloy wheels, LED headlamps, leather upholstery, two-zone climate control, heated front seats, a 12.3-inch digital instrument binnacle and a nine-inch infotainment system. R-Design models also get an aggressive exterior styling pack, sports seats and privacy glass, while Volvo’s Inscription trim-level adds chrome trim, deeper-pile carpets and a massage function for the front seats.

The V90 estate range has also been restructured, although the updates differ from those applied to its saloon sibling. The estate is no longer offered with Volvo’s T8 plug-in hybrid powertrain – now, the most powerful unit available is the T6-badged 2.0-litre four-cylinder plug-in hybrid, which develops 250bhp and 350Nm of torque.

Meanwhile, it retains Volvo’s conventional range of combustion engines. Options include a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder petrol unit with either 194bhp, 247bhp or 296bhp outputs, or a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder diesel with either 187bhp or 232bhp. The most powerful version of each engine also features an all-wheel-drive system.

Prices for the V90 estate start £40,475 for the entry-level Momentum model and climb to £56,030 for the range-topping PHEV-powered Inscription variant. Volvo’s off-road inspired Cross Country trim-level is also available on all-wheel-drive models, priced from £49,900.
