2023 Vauxhall Mokka Electric gets an improved 252-mile range

Vauxhall gives the Mokka Electric a new battery which also adds more performance

Vauxhall Mokka Electric 2023

Not only has Vauxhall changed the name of its Mokka-e to Mokka Electric, but it has also given the small SUV a new powertrain, which boosts range and adds some extra performance. The revised Mokka Electric will go on sale in March this year, with first deliveries scheduled shortly after that.

Almost every mainstream manufacturer has a car in the all-electric crossover segment. Offerings from Vauxhall’s sister brands within the Stellantis group include the Citroen e-C4 and Peugeot e-2008 - both of which fail to match the Mokka Electric’s increased 252-mile range. Jeep’s upcoming Avenger will use the same battery as the Mokka and offer two miles more range.

That battery itself is now a 54kWh unit - replacing the old 50kWh pack.  The extra capacity allows for an improvement of 43 miles over the old car, but also comes with a more potent electric motor.

Powering the front wheels, the motor produces 154bhp and 260Nm of torque. It’s more efficient, helping to deliver that improved range, but brings a 20bhp power increase that allows the Mokka Electric to reach 62mph from rest in under 10 seconds. As before, the electric Mokka will go on to an electronically limited top speed of 93mph.

The Mokka Electric’s battery and motor specs are very similar to those of the recently announced Astra Electric, albeit with 10Nm less torque than its hatchback stablemate. However, while the Astra rides on the EMP2 platform from parent company Stellantis, the Mokka is underpinned by the smaller e-CMP architecture.

Like the Astra, the Mokka Electric supports 100kW DC rapid charging, enabling a zero-to-80 per cent top up in half an hour. An 11kW onboard charger is fitted as standard too, and despite the larger battery unit, Vauxhall claims that the Mokka Electric’s cabin space hasn’t been compromised, and the 310-litre boot capacity is unchanged.

Other models within the Stellantis group - including the Citroen e-C4 and Peugeot e-2008 - utilise the same underpinnings as the Mokka, we’re likely to see the new powertrain tech rolled out to its relatives in due course. We expect a modest uplift over the outgoing car’s £36,335 asking price when the new Mokka Electric goes on sale this year.
