Tyre roar is a big issue - so we look for the quietest choice

It's clear from comments online that many drivers are no longer looking for improved performance from their tyres. Instead, they want patterns which give a quieter and more comfortable ride.

The smoothest, quietest rubber is the Bridgestone, closely followed by Dunlop and Fulda. Continental was a fraction behind. There was then a gap to fifth-placed Vredestein, which was a similar performer to the Goodyear and Hankook, and then the Michelin.

Kumho and Pirelli were way behind, and we didn’t need a noise meter to know we were on the Wanlis. They made their presence known at most speeds. Maxxis would have come third if it was included in our ranking.
