New Toyota Aygo X Undercover limited edition uncovered

Avantgarde fashion brand Undercover has teamed up with Toyota to create a high-fashion Aygo X special edition

Toyota has teamed up with fashion brand Undercover to create an Aygo X special edition just in time for Paris fashion week. The funky city car comes with a variety of unique styling elements, and will go on sale in the UK priced at £20,095, £1,200 more than the top-spec Exclusive model on which it’s based.

Fashion and automotive collaborations aren’t unusual in the car industry, and in this case Toyota has teamed up with visionary Japanese designer Jun Takahashi, the man behind the Undercover brand. Changes on the limited edition Aygo X include a unique grey and black two-tone exterior, a solid black finish to the standard-fit 18-inch wheels and coral coloured decals and detailing to the interior. The cabin’s upholstery is also inspired by the Undercover  brand, with monogrammed seats and patterned floor mats.

These unique additions join the Exclusive model’s standard equipment list that includes a high-resolution 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, adaptive cruise control, automatic climate control and wireless phone charging.

Like all Aygo X models, under the bonnet is a 1-litre naturally-aspirated three-cylinder engine that produces 72bhp at a buzzy 6,000rpm and 92Nm of torque. This is connected to a five-speed manual or automatic transmission that then powers the front wheels – there’s no all-wheel drive option despite its quasi-crossover styling. Performance is not a strong point, reaching 62mph in 14.9 seconds, but the Aygo X counters with a strong 56.8mpg WLTP figure and corresponding 110g/km CO2 rating.

Speaking of the new collaboration, Tadao Mori, Toyota Motor Europe’s head of styling and design said: “Fashion design and car design have a lot in common, but Jun introduced us to completely new ways of looking at colour and ideas for how to make more of everyday details to create something more interesting and unexpected.”

When queried about the future of the city car, he continued: “Toyota will always find a way to offer a model in this segment, especially as our competitors leave it. We see this as an opportunity to occupy the market, even as electrification and tightening regulations makes it more difficult.”

The Aygo X Undercover will be limited to 5,000 units Europe-wide, with UK allocation still to be confirmed.
