Updated Toyota Rav4 will get hybrid powertrain

Toyota's facelifted mid-size SUV will get a petrol electric hybrid, set for New York show

The third-generation Toyota Rav4 might have only been on sale since 2013, but Toyota is preparing an updated model that it will be bringing to the New York Motor Show next month. As well as a revised look, it is confirmed to get a hybrid powertrain to rival that of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.

Few details have been given so far, and the teaser image isn't exactly revealing, but we can see a sharper LED tail-lamp design. The rest of the back end appears to remain broadly similar to the current car, but we can expect design changes similar to that shown on the recent Auris and Avensis facelifts.

That will mean a more aggressive grille and bumper design, with angled headlamps and daytime running lights. Material upgrades and new tech will feature in the cabin, as well as updated engines including BMW-sourced turbodiesels and likely a turbocharged petrol unit.

But the biggest news is the inclusion of a hybrid powertrain for the first time. It'll likely be an adaptation of the petrol-electric system found in the current Auris and Prius, although dual electric motors could feature to give it four-wheel drive ability.

It should also receive Toyota's latest range of Active safety tech. The 'Safety Sense' system will bring a collision avoidance system, active braking and cross-traffic alerts. We'll have more information when our reporters head to New York next month.
