Toyota GT 86

Toyota GT 86

The GT 86 – as well as its Subaru BRZ sister car – scores with its back to basics appeal: it combines a lightweight body and traditional sports car dimensions with a 197bhp 2.0-litre engine and rear-wheel drive to great effect. The driving experience will appeal to purists who are tired of technology taking over, with a beautifully balanced chassis and plenty of feedback from the precise steering.

Yet the GT 86 won’t cost a fortune to run. The manual car promises 36.2mpg fuel consumption, while the auto returns 39.8mpg and has lower emissions for cheaper road tax. Low insurance group ratings add to the appeal, although service intervals stand at only 10,000 miles.

The four-seater interior is surprisingly spacious and practical – boot size is 243 litres – and while it’s not especially exciting, everything feels built to last, with buyers unlikely to encounter any reliability problems. All this before you even look at the price – the GT 86 is one of the biggest sports car bargains of recent years.
