Toyota FT-3e concept gives us a glimpse of the brand’s future SUVs

The new Toyota concept will be shown off at the Tokyo Motor Show

Toyota is planning to launch 30 new all-electric vehicles by 2030 and we’ve just gained new information on a forthcoming mid-sized SUV thanks to this Toyota FT-3e concept.

The FT-3e concept will preview a production car that we expect to see in the next few years. The concept itself will be unveiled at Toyota’s stand at the Tokyo Motor Show between October 26 and November 5.

Back in 2021 we saw 11 new concepts detailing Toyota’s plans for an electric car future, but this FT-3e looks to be a completely new offering. Teased alongside the sporty FT-Se concept, the FT-3e looks a similar size to the firm’s current bZ4X

We can already see some distinctive design touches despite the shadowy images. There’s a full-width rear light bar that wraps around a curvy back end and plenty of bulky, angular surfacing down the side.

Toyota says the concept “will enrich customers’ daily lives with personalised services powered by innovative technologies”. One aspect of these new technologies is the digital display that sits on the outside of the car. It shows information on battery charge, onboard temperature and even air quality to the driver when they approach the car.

Earlier this year Toyota announced it would introduce its next-generation of EVs by 2026 and that these models would account for 1.7m out of a total 3.5m electric cars from Toyota globally by 2030.

Three core battery technologies will be implemented. A ‘performance’ battery will maximise range figures (up to 497 miles), a ‘popularisation’ for cutting costs (up to 40 per cent compared to bZ4X) and a ‘high performance’ battery for sports cars. It’s feasible the production version of the FT-3e could come with the ‘performance’ and cheaper ‘popularisation’ battery offerings.
