Suzuki Jimny five-door version unveiled for 2023

The larger, more practical version of Suzuki’s retro SUV should be just as capable off-road

Suzuki has revealed a new five-door version of the Jimny at the Auto Expo in Delhi. Officially marketed by Maruti Suzuki in India, the bigger Jimny won’t come to the UK due to emissions regulations.

Although the three-door, four-seat Jimny was taken off sale here in 2020, there’s still the Jimny Commercial on offer - which was Suzuki’s fairly sly way of lowering their car fleet emissions with a van version of the Jimny.

The five-door, five-seat Jimny however is only available in India (where it’ll be produced), Africa and Latin America. The standard Jimny is small enough to be marketed as a kei car in Japan but the five-door model is 250mm longer at 3,645mm - although the width and height remain the same as the three-door.

A 340mm longer wheelbase allows for more cabin space with a rear bench that folds away to create 332 litres of boot space. With the rear seats up the boot capacity stands at 208 litres, way higher than the three-door’s measly 85 litres.

At the front of the cabin it’s pretty much the same with chunky grab handles with exposed bolts on the passenger side, a nine-inch central touchscreen and a small screen in between the speedo and rev counter – providing trip information like fuel economy and predicted range.

The powertrain is the same as before, suggesting the larger five-door will be slower and a little less fuel efficient. The 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine produces 104bhp and 134Nm of torque going to a four-wheel drive system through either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission.

There’s still some serious off-road potential with a 36-degree approach angle, 24-degree breakover angle, 50-degree departure angle and 210mm ground clearance. Thanks to Suzuki’s ALLGRIP Pro system there are three driving settings: 2H, 4H and 4L, in normal driving the Jimny will only drive the rear wheels.
