New Smart ForTwo and ForFour to start from £11k

Smart has released full details and pricing for its ForTwo and ForFour city car, ahead of early 2015 launch

The Smart ForTwo will always be a divisive car; its size, looks and dynamics have as many fans as detractors. But, as our drive of the prototype earlier this year revealed, Mercedes-owned Smart may win a lot of people round. We'll soon find out as the car is almost here with prices and details out now.

Joined once again by an elongated four-seater ForFour brother, the 2.69-metre ForTwo city car will appear at the start of next year. It will be priced from £11,125, with the ForFour only £495 more, and both cars are generously equipped for the class.

The two models can be fitted with either a 71bhp three-cylinder engine or, for £595 extra, a 91bhp three-pot turbo is available. Both engines come with a five-speed manual gearbox for the first time on a Smart, although a six-speed dual-clutch auto is a £995 option.

Three model lines will be available for both models: Passion, Prime and Proxy. Entry-level Passion spec gets 15-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, automatic climate control, a Bluetooth audio and phone system, and two interior colour choices (orange and black or white and black).

Move up to Prime spec, for a very reasonable £695 extra, and you get gloss black 15-inch alloys, a panoramic glass roof with sun protection, heated leather seats, and lane-keeping assist. The traditional 'pod' style rev counter and clocks also feature.

Proxy spec, which is identically priced to Prime, offers a sportier style and gets 16-inch black 'Y-spoke' alloys, glass roof, a blue and white interior with Artico and cloth upholstery, lane keeping assist and the Sports Package. That package includes a leather multifunction wheel, 10mm lowered suspension, sports pedals and a chrome exhaust finisher.

Optional extras include Premium and Premium Plus packages. Premium costs £795, and brings rear parking assist, Smart media system with navigation, and the comfort pack which includes a height adjustable wheel and electric heated mirrors.

Premium Plus (£1,295) is only available on Prime and Proxy spec, and brings ambient lighting, LED headlamps with coming home function, rain and light sensors, and a rear view camera.

Safety kit on all ForTwos and ForFours includes five airbags, ABS, ESP, ISOFIX mountings and tyre pressure monitoring. Also standard is crosswind assist, a crash sensor system, and Collision Prevention Assist is a £195 option.

A special edition will be available from launch, dubbed Edition 1. It will cost from £13,225 and get unique colour schemes inside and out, plus the Sports and Premium Plus package as standard.
