Michelin Alpin 7 review

The Michelin landed in 4th place in our winter tyre test, but it was a very close call

So close were the tyres in third to fifth place that the smallest tweak to the scoring could have shuffled the finishing order. The Michelin delivered one table-topping performance and one third place, but it performed consistently well and was impressive on all three surfaces.

In terms of its priorities, it scored best on snow, claiming third in traction and fourth in braking – a scant 0.21m off the best. It was fifth around the snow lap, too, and it handled the challenge calmly with an easy, predictable, nose-led balance, combined with gritty traction out of the corners.

In the key wet-braking test it was 1.4m behind the standard-setting Continental, while it was just 1.3 seconds off the pace around the demanding wet lap, where it was grippy, with strong traction and a useful, predictable agility.

Rounding out a solid wet performance, it was fifth on the circle and also in straight-line aquaplaning. It was mid-field in dry braking and well down the order in dry handling, feeling like it was grinding out the time. But by some margin it delivered the lowest rolling resistance, adding best economy to its long list of attributes.

Blackcircles.com says…

“A consistently excellent tyre that delivers great performance in the snow and the wet. It’s also refined and the most economical.”
