Porsche Cayman R

The Cayman R's 325bhp engine delivers mighty performance and the drive is intoxicating

The regular Cayman S is a two-time winner of our Performance Car Of The Year, so you’d expect the more focused R model to be even better. It doesn’t disappoint.

How do you go about making the standard car even more thrilling? Porsche has squeezed an extra 10bhp out of the 3.4-litre flat-six engine, shaved 55kg off its kerbweight, stiffened the suspension and added a limited-slip differential.

A fixed rear wing and garish decals set it apart on the outside, but it’s those technical tweaks that make the R such a tantalising prospect.

The introduction of a smaller fuel tank, aluminium doors and the removal of luxuries like a stereo and climate control combine with a 20mm-lower ride height to produce the most driver-focused Cayman yet.

Unsurprisingly, the end result is sensational. A perfect balance between front and rear grip, almost unbreakable traction and sharper body control mean the purest of driving experiences, while the steering delivers a constant stream of feedback.

The engine is a gem, too. Although performance increases are subtle, the enthusiastic power delivery and sharp throttle response are complemented by the deep wail of the exhaust. Only the McLaren and Ferrari set a faster lap time in Anglesey, but away from the track, the ride is firm on broken surfaces and the lack of a radio can make long drives a solitary experience.

If you rate driver engagement above all else, the R delivers undiluted pleasure. The only thing that stops it finishing higher is the Cayman S. It’s £4,124 cheaper and we think it’s a better day-to-day choice; it remains our favourite Cayman.
