Porsche 911 Targa 4 GTS gets extra power and styling tweaks
Porsche's first GTS edition of a Targa model will be most driver-focused yet, priced at £104,385 and going on sale in March
Porsche has been pleasing its fans at this year's Detroit Motor Show with two new reveals. The removable-roof 911 Targa has been given the GTS treatment for the first time, with a 424bhp 3.8 litre flat-six. The wraps are also off the new 562bhp Cayenne Turbo S, which guns for the title of the world's fastest production SUV.
The Porsche 911 received the famous GTS badge late last year for the coupe and convertible. Now the open-air Targa model gets the GTS treatment, with unique styling upgrades, all-wheel drive and a jump in power. It's set to go on sale in March this year, starting at £104,385.
The exterior of the Targa 4 GTS gets the same specific additions as the coupe and convertible. This means centre-locking gloss black 20-inch alloy wheels, a wider body thanks to flared wheel arches and 10mm thicker rear tyres. GTS badging, smoked light clusters with dynamic front lamps and black exhaust pipes help set the car apart from lesser 911s.
The 3.8-litre flat-six from the Carrera S now gets 424bhp in the GTS, an increase of 30bhp. Torque remains at 440Nm. Thanks to the heavier standard-fit four-wheel drive of the Targa 4 GTS, and the additional structural bracing required for the electric folding metal roof section, it weighs some 135kg more than the rear-drive GTS coupe.
That increase in mass means the 0-62mph time for the seven-speed manual Targa is 4.7 seconds, while the PDK-equipped car manages it in 4.3 seconds. Top speed is 188mph, only 2mph down on the coupe. Fuel economy remains identical to that of the Targa 4S, at 30.7mpg.
The GTS also gets the Sport Chrono pack, adding a lap-timer and stopwatch. Dynamic engine mounts, a sports exhaust, torque-vectoring control with a limited-slip diff and PASM suspension management are also standard.
The cabin gets black Alcantara on the seats and wheel, and brushed aluminium trim accents. The silver roll-over protection hoop of the Targa also gets gloss black detailing. Standard equipment includes Porsche's Communication Management with sat-nav, a DAB radio and an anti-theft tracker.
