Nissan Juke

The Nissan Qashqai was such a success that the Nissan Juke was almost inevitable. This smaller crossover combines the dimensions of a supermini with a distinctive 4x4-like design – it looks like nothing else on the road. But again, it's proven a big seller, with buyers won over by its funky interior, capable handling, impressive efficiency and low insurance group ratings.

Most models are front-wheel drive, but if you want a bit of off-road ability to live up to the looks, 4x4 versions of the Juke are available. They have reasonable towing capacity, too, but they're at the top of the price range. Better to stick to one of the front-wheel-drive models. Diesel versions deliver low fuel consumption and emissions, and bring low road tax bills, but a punchy petrol Juke can make more sense on account of its lower price.

Whichever engine and spec you go for, there's plenty of equipment. But bear in mind that boot size is a bit tight, at 251 litres, and the cramped rear seats further hamper practicality.
