New GWM Poer 300 pick-up truck has the Ford Ranger in its crosshairs

The diesel-powered, double cab pick-up truck will start from £31,495 – a few hundred pounds more than its key rival

Meet the new GWM Poer 300: the latest challenger to the seven-time winner of our Pick-up Truck of the Year award, the Ford Ranger, as well as fellow long-serving workhorses like the Volkswagen Amarok, Toyota Hilux and Isuzu D-Max

This is the latest addition to the GWM (Great Wall Motors) ‘brand portfolio’, which already contains the Ora 03 electric supermini and the Haval Jolion Hybrid Pro SUV. Also, in case you’re wondering, the name ‘Poer’ is apparently pronounced ‘power’.

Anyway, the utilitarian, double cab pick-up is due to go on sale in the UK in mid-September, with prices starting from £31,495 (excluding VAT). That means it will be slightly more expensive than the most basic Ranger or KGM Musso, but the newcomer will be able to undercut its VW, Toyota and Isuzu rivals by a few thousand pounds.

Of course, there are plenty of Ford Rangers and other pick-ups that you can buy right now via the Auto Express Find a Car service…

The Poer 300 is powered exclusively by a 2.4-litre turbo‑diesel engine that delivers 181bhp and 480Nm of torque, and supposedly can return up to 32.7mpg. It’s paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission, plus full-time 4×4 system with low-range capability.

The truck has a braked towing capacity of 3,500kg and can carry a payload of up to 1,000kg. If you need to head off-road, the Poer 300 has specific drive modes for Snow, Mud and Sand, an electronic locking rear differential, 230mm of ground clearance, a 27-degree approach angle and 25-degree departure angle.

When order books open, three trim levels will be available: Lux, UItra and Vanta. Standard equipment on every Poer 300 will include a 12.3-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, 7.0-inch digital instrument panel, a wireless charging pad, keyless entry, rear parking sensors and a 5-year/125,000-mile warranty.

Mid-range versions add a sunroof, heated and ventilated seats, ambient lighting, tailgate step, 360-degree camera system and other features, meanwhile top-spec models get black wheelarches, alloy wheels and an all-black exterior.
