GWM Haval Jolion Pro Hybrid aims to corner SUV market with sub-£24,000 price tag

There’s a new Chinese budget SUV and it comes from the same people that brought you the Funky Cat

Initial pricing has been revealed for the new GWM Haval Jolion Pro Hybrid, with the family-focused SUV starting from £23,995 and topping out at £29,995.

Haval might not be a name British buyers will recognise, but its models will be sold alongside cars from Ora (the people behind the Funky Cat and more recently the 03) at Great Wall Motors (GWM) dealerships nationwide.

Haval and Ora are two of the five brands owned by Chinese automotive giant GWM. Ora arrived in the UK in 2022 and now has 40 retailers around the country. All of these locations will soon be re-branded from GWM Ora to simply GWM, because they will be offering cars from Ora, Haval and potentially other brands from within the group in the future, all under one roof.

While the Ora Funky Cat is an all-electric supermini, the Jolion Pro Hybrid takes aim at the Nissan Qashqai and MG ZS. The Haval has been around since 2021 in China, where it’s called the Chitu, and was launched this year in other markets, including South Africa and Australia. It measures 4,470mm long and is slightly larger overall than the Qashqai and ZS.

Three trim levels will be offered: entry-level Premium, mid-range Lux and range-topping Ultra. There’s a choice of 17-inch or 18-inch alloy wheels (depending on the trim level), LED front and rear lights, and on the Ultra version, an electric panoramic roof and a 360-degree camera.

Inside, the Jolion Pro will feature a 12.3-inch central touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, plus a seven-inch digital instrument panel. There’s also keyless entry, a push-button start and – on Ultra trim – a head-up display and wireless smartphone charger. Lux features heating on the front seats, and Ultra adds ventilation.

There’s just one powertrain option with the Haval Jolion Pro Hybrid. It's a full-hybrid set-up consisting of a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine and one electric motor. Combined power output is rated at 188bhp and claimed fuel economy in other markets is 55mpg.
