New Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport targets agility over speed

Following the high speed Chiron 300+ edition, the new Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport aims to excel in the corners rather than on the straights

This is the Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport, a new version of the hypercar that’s designed to be more agile and involving than the regular model and the top speed-focused 300+ edition.

Bugatti’s engineers took weight out of the wheels, brake pads and brake discs to help shave 50kg off a regular Chiron’s mass. Then they stiffened the front and rear springs, adjusted the adaptive dampers and fitted an additional drive mode that holds back the traction control to allow, in theory, drifting under the right conditions.

The Chiron's four-turbo W16 engine is unchanged, so the Pur Sport has 1,479bhp and 1,600Nm of torque. But the redline has been nudged upwards by 200rpm and more significantly, the seven-speed gearbox has been given closer ratios.  The hydraulically extending rear spoiler has also been axed, replaced by a fixed item whose simpler configuration contributes 10kg to the aforementioned weight saving.

After all of these modifications, the Pur Sport’s top speed is a mere 217mph - well down from the regular car’s 261mph. But Bugatti argues that this makes the new arrival more relevant on twisty roads and on track days, because the surge from 37mph to 75mph takes almost two seconds less than in the standard car. Bugatti boss Stephan Winkelmann said, “We spoke to customers and realised they wanted a vehicle that is geared even more towards agility and dynamic cornering.”

Bugatti will begin manufacturing the Chiron Pur Sport in the second half of this year. The company plans to produce just 60 examples of the car, priced at around £2.6million plus local taxes where applicable.
