Top 5 Frankfurt Monsters

The Frankfurt Motor Show 2013 featured its share of stunning and not so stunning models; we pick the top five monstrosities

For every stunner at Frankfurt, there something that's no so easy on the eye. From concept cars to production cars that have been modified beyond recognition, here is Auto Express’ round up of what failed to impress at Frankfurt.

1. Smart Fortwo Jeremy Scott Edition

We first saw the Smart Fortwo Jeremy Scott Edition – then called the Smart ForJeremy concept – at the L.A. Motor Show in 2012, but this time the production version was unveiled at Frankfurt. American fashion designer Jeremy Scott is known for his wild and attention grabbing clothing and Smart were only too happy to have some of his outlandish designs adorn its Fortwo citycar. The production version is largely unchanged from the concept, although the designers have toned down the extreme styling by reducing the number of fins on each of the wings to five rather than seven. Still, we can't see this craze taking off.

2. Brabus B63S-700

Mercedes tuner Brabus, has got its hands on the six-wheeled Mercedes G63 AMG and added yet more power along with some striking visual upgrades. Now called the Brabus B63S-700, power from the 5.5-litre V8 Biturbo is up by 154bhp to 690bhp, which is delivered to all six wheels. Weighing just shy of four tons at 3775kg, the top speed is limited to 100mph, a restriction of the 37-inch wheels rather than the monstrous powertrain. The drama on the outside is continued on the inside, too. Swathes of red leather and black Alcantara bathe the interior, even the foot-wells and door card are unable to escape being covered in cowhide. The price for such a machine is well in excess of £350,000 but you’ll be safe in the knowledge it would be able to tackle the toughest of British winters.

3. Mansory Carbonado

Mansory is famed for taking svelte Italian supercars and transforming them into cars the divide opinion. The Lamborghini Aventador, now the Mansory Carbonado, is the latest car to be given a Mansory makeover. Mansory has festooned the Aventador with lashings of carbon fibre inside and out and restyled the front and rear bumpers. The Mansory Carbonado isn’t just restricted to cosmetic revisions either. The 691bhp V12 in the Aventador has been dramatically retuned and now delivers 1,250bhp, thanks to the addition of two turbochargers. From a standstill the Carbonado can reach 62mph in 2.6 seconds and the top speed has been raised to 236mph. However, the price is almost as eye watering as its looks, costing around £750,000.

4. Techart Magnum Gold Edition

Already renowned for its dodgy styling, German tuning company Techart has given the Porsche Cayenne a controversial fresh look. Called the Techart Magnum Gold Edition, the model celebrates the company’s expansion into the Asian market signified by the unassuming red and gold colour combination. A raft of visual upgrades have been fitted to the Cayenne such as gold alloy wheels and a new bodykit, which now includes quad-fog lights and LED day time running lights. Bonnet vents and larger air intakes would indicate a hike in power but they’re purely cosmetic. You can make your own Porsche Cayenne look like the Gold Edition by contacting Techart, but be prepared to take a hit on the resale value.

5. Hamann Mystere

The Hamann Mystere may look familiar to you. Based on the new Range Rover, it was showcased at the Geneva Motor Show earlier in the year, albeit dressed in rather eye-catching chrome pink. Looking equally outlandish finished in matte grey in Frankfurt, the Hamann Mystere retains the steroid-abused Range Rover look, sitting 40mm lower to the ground, while an extreme bodykit gives it a wider stance. There’s a new front splitter among the maze of vents and air intakes at the front and the wheels are 23-inch forged alloys, so a compromise on ride quality is to be expected.
