New MG GS SUV priced from £14,995: full details

Sub-£15k starting price for the new MG GS SUV makes it at least £3k cheaper than most of its main rivals

After its official London Motor Show reveal in May, UK pricing for the MG GS SUV has been announced as the car goes on sale. You'll be able to buy the new MG GS from £14,995.

That sub-£15k price tag gets you a GS in entry-level Explore trim, which is £3,555 less than the most basic Nissan Qashqai. All cars cars get cruise control, automatic headlights and air-conditioning as standard.

Mid-range Excite trim, priced at £17,495, adds DAB radio, Bluetooth connectivity and parking sensors, while top-of-the-range Exclusive features electric leather sports seats, sat-nav, larger alloy wheels and the choice of a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission instead of the the standard six-speed manual gearbox. The only engine available at launch is a 164bhp 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine.

Inside, we can see a completely new dashboard design, not just one lifted from the MG 6. An updated sat-nave system debuts, while all models are said to be very well equipped.

Anthony Williams-Kenny, Global Design Director for MG, said: “With MG’s first SUV, we wanted to design a car that would fit in with the MG family and have a slightly different look, of confidence and dynamism, that sets it apart from the other models.”

In addition of the sleek lines of the GS, we can see styling cues lifted from the existing MG3 supermini and MG6 family car with trapezoidal headlamps joined by a slim grille with the MG octagon badge at its centre.

MG claims that the GS rides on a new scalable SUV platform developed by SAIC which could underpin smaller MG Juke-sized crossover, set for a launch in 2017.

MG eyes up electric future with hybrid 6 and GS

Dimensions of 4,500mm in length, 1,675mm width and 1,675mm height position the MG GS at the upper end of the compact SUV class in terms of size with the likes of Kia's Sportage and Honda's CR-V shaping-up as rivals - although we'd expect the MG to undercut these mainstream players on price.

Drive will be channeled via a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox to either front- or four-wheel-drive mechanicals depending on the buyer's preference. Additional engine options, including a 1.8-litre diesel, will join the range in the UK.
