New 2020 Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 hits LA with 603bhp

The new Mercedes-AMG GLS arrives as one of the most powerful seven-seaters ever, boasting 603bhp and a 4.2-second 0-62mph time

This is the new Mercedes-AMG GLS 63, one of the world’s most powerful seven-seaters. Revealed at this year’s Los Angeles Motor Show the flagship SUV is due to land in UK dealers in the middle of next year.

Like all new models from the Mercedes-AMG division, the GLS is powered by a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8. Here it develops 603bhp and 850Nm of torque, which is distributed to Merc’s four-wheel drive 4MATIC system via a nine-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

For the first time the AMG 4.0-litre V8 has also been paired with an integrated starter-alternator system that Mercedes refers to as EQ Boost, which sits between the engine and transmission.

Under acceleration the electric motor delivers an additional 22bhp and 250Nm of torque to boost performance; Mercedes-AMG claims the GLS can hit 0-62mph in 4.2 seconds. Top speed is limited to 155mph but owners can increase that to 174mph with the AMG Driver’s pack. However, the motor is also able to perform hybrid functions such as energy recuperation and smoother engine restarts with the car’s stop/start function.

As standard the GLS 63 comes with Merc’s Ride Control+ air suspension, which comes with a pneumatic self-leveling function. It allows the GLS to maintain a constant vehicle level regardless of cornering speed. Six drive modes (Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Individual, Trail, and Sand) alter various vehicle parameters to improve performance or off-road ability depending on setting.

Visually, the familiar AMG makeover has been applied to the GLS. The front grille is now larger and finished in chrome, the lower bumper has wider air intakes and four-tailpipes now sprout from the rear bumper. Alloy wheels up to 23-inches in size are also available.
