Updated Mercedes-AMG GLA 35 arrives with mild-hybrid power

The sporty small Mercedes-AMG GLA 35 SUV gets electrified for 2023 alongside a new exterior design

AMG develops an increasingly broad spectrum of Mercedes models, with all-electric EQ cars even entering the fold. Affalterbach hasn’t forgotten about its more modest offerings however, spending the time to give the GLA 35 an update for 2023.

Along with the standard GLA’s mid-life facelift, the AMG 35 has received similar fettling to make it better than ever. Mercedes is yet to announce its update to the range-topping AMG 45, but we expect to see it launch in the coming months.

The biggest change for the AMG 35 is the introduction of electrification to the powertrain. It’s the same system that is now found in the mild-hybrid GLA. A 48-volt unit serves up a temporary 13bhp boost in power, although total output combined with the 2.0-litre, turbocharged four-cylinder unit remains at 302bhp and 400Nm of torque.

Acceleration is actually 0.1 seconds slower than before with the GLA 35 taking 5.2 seconds to go from 0-62mph, top speed stands at 155mph. Mercedes’ all-wheel drive ‘4MATIC’ system is standard and power is sent through an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The exterior of the GLA 35 receives relatively minor tweaks with a redesigned headlight signature, a slightly altered lower front bumper, body-coloured wheel arches and a new rear light cluster.

Alloy wheels range from the standard 19-inch, 10-spoke AMG rims up to 20-inch. The outgoing model came with 21-inch wheels when equipped with the ‘Premium Plus’ trim, which we expect to see added later on.

The interior gains a few changes of its own with a new ‘AMG Performance’ steering wheel with AMG-specific buttons enabling easier access to driving settings for the driver. The latest MBUX (Mercedes’ infotainment system) features bespoke AMG graphics in the same twin 10.25-inch screen set up from before. An extra USB-C port has been added for front occupants. The GLA also gains a new ‘Parking Package’ which helps parallel parking via a 360-degree camera.

Pricing hasn’t been announced yetm but with the new mild-hybrid system we expect the facelifted car to receive an increase over the outgoing car’s £47,955 starting price tag.
