New 2023 Mercedes-AMG E 53: hot saloon and estate spied

Sporty AMG versions of the latest E-Class will begin with the 53

Mercedes unveiled the sixth-generation E-Class earlier this summer, and the latest testing images suggest AMG E 53 derivatives are just around the corner.

We’ve caught the E 53 testing in saloon and estate form before, but these latest spy pictures show cars with less camouflage, giving us a better look at Mercedes’ hot executive cars. We expect a full reveal of the Mercedes-AMG E 53 later on in the year, ahead of the full-fat E 63 iteration.

As with previous E 53s, the overall design will not stray from the standard E-Class too much, though the E 63 will offer up an even more aggressive exterior design. We can however spot a few key tweaks that’ll help the E 53 stand out from the less sporty variants.

A bespoke grille and a larger lower air intake in the front bumper is visible on these test cars, as are the larger alloy wheels that house a beefier braking system. AMG’s traditional quad-tip exhaust layout sits beside a rear diffuser.

The new E-Class features plenty of advanced technology but the biggest change is the inclusion of a new ‘Superscreen’ infotainment system - which is essentially a smaller version of the Hyperscreen set up. Mercedes typically likes to bring extra data and menus with its AMG cars so expect some new performance-focused features on the E 53.

Under the bonnet we could well see the same turbocharged 3.0-litre straight-six as the S580e’s, combined with a battery to make around 503bhp and 750Nm of torque - a decent increase on the outgoing E 53’s 429bhp and 520Nm. Competition for the new E 53 will be just as fresh in the form of to Audi’s updated S6 and the latest BMW 5 Series.

Mercedes is only offering the new E-Class in sporty AMG Line trim here in the UK due to market demand, so you would think the high performance E 53 could make up a good chunk of the sales. Although more patient buyers might make the jump past the E 53 to the incoming E 63 model instead.
