Mazda Koeru SUV concept heads in sporty direction

Mazda Koeru concept car hints that Mazda could be about to get in on the coupe SUV craze

Mazda has revealed a stunning new crossover SUV concept at Frankfurt Motor Show, which points the way to a production model sitting between the current CX-3 and CX-5. Dubbed ‘Koeru’’ – Japanese for ‘go beyond’ – it’s billed as a cut-price alternative to premium coupe SUV models such as the BMW X4.

The sharp-front end takes its inspiration straight from the CX-3, but from the A-pillar back it’s rakish coupe-like profile is all-new. The side view brings bold creases and a rising shoulderline, while the muscular rear haunches are distinctly premium in look. The sloping rear-end design is more athletic than the practicality-focused CX-5.

• Best crossovers to buy now

Butch wheelarches and 21-inch wheels also feature, but like most crossovers of this type, on-road dynamic ability is the focus rather than off-road prowess. Mazda claims outstanding aerodynamics for the Koeru, designed to enhance it’s stability at high speeds. That brings about the possibility that Mazda is considering a hot model to target the same performance crossover market as the Nissan ‘Gripz’ concept as well as versions using the familiar Mazda SKYACTIV four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines.

• Frankfurt Motor Show 2015

The interior shot – only a sketch for now – shows a cabin design reflective of the CX-3, but with a rising centre console to give a more focused cockpit feel. Although just a concept, we could expect a production model of the Mazda Koeru to appear sometime after 2017.

What do you think of the Mazda Koeru concept? Would a production version work for Mazda? Let us know in the comments below...
