New Maserati Grecale Folgore is brand’s first electric car

A 105kWh battery promises plenty of range when the new all-electric Maserati Grecale Folgore arrives next year

Maserati has revealed the first model in its upcoming all-electric revolution. It’s called the Grecale Folgore, and it’s a pure electric variant of its new sub-Levante SUV that will arrive a little after the introduction of the petrol-powered versions. It's on sale now with a £109,950 starting price

The Grecale Folgore is also one of six new all-electric Maseratis we can expect to see by 2025, as part of the brand’s ‘Folgore’ electrification strategy. Maserati will make an electric version of the GranTurismo coupe in 2023, while zero emission versions of the MC20 supercar, the Levante SUV, and the Quattroporte saloon are all in the pipeline.

The size of the Grecale Folgore makes it a rival for models like the BMW iX3 and the Mercedes EQC, while it has been designed to stay fairly in sync with the combustion engined versions of the Grecale visually.

The new ‘horizontal’ look applied to the front end takes inspiration from the new MC20 supercar, but with some added all-electric twists. The grille has been redesigned with a new low-drag look, but the prominent Maserati trident remains. The lower sections of the apron have been revised too, prioritising aerodynamic efficiency over no-longer needed engine cooling.

That aside, the Folgore looks exactly the same as the petrol powered versions of the Grecale. A new copper-colour called Rame Folgore will be exclusively available on the EV, alongside new six-spoke aerodynamic wheels.

Maserati has not revealed the cabin of the Folgore just yet, but has confirmed that Econyl material will be used extensively to upholster the interior. This is a nylon using recycled material from old fishing nets, found in other Stellantis EVs such as the electric Fiat 500. It’s almost certain to feature the same 12.3-inch digital instrument panel and Android Automotive powered 8.8-inch central touchscreen, plus Maserati’s new digital clock voice command interface.

The Folgore uses an adapted version of the regular car’s platform, which is a heavily updated version of the Giogio architecture used by the Alfa Romeo Stelvio. Some technical details have been confirmed, such as 400v electrification and a battery 105kWh in size. The motor system of the Folgore will develop around 540bhp and 800Nm, but precise performance figures, and importantly, a maximum range has not been confirmed. Charging technology remains under wraps for now, too.
