New Lexus LC Structural Blue Edition arrives with the 'perfect' blue paint job

As part of its quest for the perfect blue paint, Lexus will produce a limited amount of LCs containing 300 billion blue pigment flakes.

Lexus has announced the Structural Blue Edition of the new LC coupe, which is a result of a 15-year research project to develop the perfect blue car paint job.

The blue paint scheme has been inspired by the morpho butterfly, with development of the finish taking eight months and utilising 12 production steps with over 20 quality control inspections. Lexus says around 300 billion nano-structure pigment flakes have been applied to each of the special edition LC’s with the aim to create the most lustrous blue paintjob ever seen on a vehicle.

According to Lexus, conventional blue paint pigments reflect less than 50 per cent of incoming light as a visible blue colour. The Structural Blue LC reflects nearly 100 per cent thanks to 300 grams of pigment with the 300 billion pigment flakes combined to in the vivid blue paintwork.

Due to the painstaking nature of applying the paint, only two Structural Blue LC’s can be produced in a working day. To further compliment the exclusivity of the LC Structural Blue Edition, the cars will sport 21-inch forged alloy wheels, while the interior features blue trim on the steering wheel and dashboard to enhance the exclusivity further.

The LC Structural Blue Edition is available to order now, albeit in strictly limited numbers. The V8-powered LC500 and the LC500h hybrid are the two powertrain options available to choose from.
