Lexus LF-C2 Roadster concept blows its top

Lexus LF-C2 Roadster concept previews a 2+2 convertible version of the RC coupe, and a V8-powered topless RC-F

The Lexus LF-C2 Roadster concept has been revealed at the LA Motor Show – previewing a convertible version of the all-new Lexus RC coupe.

However, unlike conventional drop-tops, the LF-C2 has no roof whatsoever. Lexus claims this is “designed to give driver and passenger the best top-down driving experience”, though in reality it probably means the company ran out of time trying to engineer one. Expect another concept version – likely at the Geneva Motor Show next year – complete with a folding metal or fabric roof.

There are no surprises in terms of styling, with the new Roadster taking an identical front end to its fixed roof sibling. That means the signature spindle grille and sharp LED headlights, as well as a pair of gaping air vents and a set of defined bonnet creases.

At the back you’ll find L-shaped tail-lights, chrome-tipped quad exhausts and a pronounced rear diffuser. A set of massive 20-inch alloy wheels and deep multi-layer paintjob complete the look.

Yasuo Kajino, the LF-C2’s chief designer, said: “We’ve been instinctively drawn to and inspired by those things that capture the beauty of light. When you put something in the right light, people see it in a way they never have before.”

Inside, the new LF-C2 features a 2+2 layout – hinting that the rear seats are just for kids or very occasional use on short journeys. The centre console runs the entire length of the car and is finished in the same vibrant yellow as the exterior. The dashboard gets an “attractive but straightforward instrument cluster”, as well as a central screen and analogue clock.

LED lights run along the inside window line and there’s a leather steering wheel and body-hugging seats. Although unconfirmed, the concept is likely to offer a large boot – thanks to the fact there’s no roof to fill it when folded.

There’s no word on engines or power yet, but we expect the concept to feature the same 450bhp 5.0-litre V8 as the production-ready RC F coupe, which goes on sale in the UK early next year. That model has an eight-speed automatic gearbox with steering wheel-mounted paddles.

We’ll have more information – and crucially more pictures – direct from the LA Motor Show over the next 24 hours.
