10. Kia Sorento

Kia Sorento 2.2 CRDi KX-2 front cornering

The Kia Sorento is closely related to the Hyundai Santa Fe, and offers a similar blend of generous equipment, competitive running costs, strong towing capacity and decent off road ability for a good-value price.

All models are four-wheel drive, and the 2.0-litre CRDi diesel promises 47.9mpg fuel consumption in manual guise. It won’t cost too much in road tax, either, thanks to its 155g/km emissions.

• Kia Sorento review

Standard equipment is generous in all models, with climate control, parking sensors and climate control, and all bar the top-spec Sorento KX-3 sit in insurance group 21.

One of the big selling points is Kia’s seven-year warranty, which covers most potential problems. Service intervals of 20,000 miles also appeal, although the Sorento won’t hold on to its value as well as premium brand rivals.

Still, many buyers will put up with this when they see how practical the interior is. The Sorento uses its dimensions well to offer more space for seven than in a compact MPV, although the two rearmost seats are still best left for children. With these and the middle-row seats folded out of the way, boot size stands at a huge 1,530 litres.
