New Hyundai Inster Cross is a little off-roader with a surprisingly big price tag

The 4x4-inspired Inter Cross adds chunkier bumpers, skid plates and a roof rack to Hyundai’s chunky little EV

The new Hyundai Inster Cross is available to order now, with prices starting from £28,745 for this rugged-looking, off-road-inspired version of Hyundai's newly launched electric city car

It doesn’t have four-wheel drive, locking differentials or any fancy ‘terrain response’ gizmos like a real 4x4. But thanks to chunkier front and rear bumpers, skid plates, embossed black side cladding, roof rails and a special set of 17-inch alloy wheels, it certainly looks ready for your next weekend camping trip.

The Inster Cross is available in four colours, including an exclusive Amazonas Green Matte shade for an extra £800. The interior also features a unique colour scheme of grey cloth upholstery with lime-yellow accents and dashboard trim, plus reclining and sliding rear seats, or you can fold down all four seats in the car.

Other standard kit includes dual 10.25-inch displays, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wireless charging pad, LED daytime running lights and headlights, keyless entry, heated steering wheel, heated front seats and an openable sunroof. A smattering of advanced driver-assistance systems are also included, such as ‘Highway Driving Assist 1.5’ that combines adaptive cruise control with lane-keep assist, and a surround-view camera system.

The ‘Long Range’ powertrain used in the Inster Cross consists of a 49kWh battery and a single 113bhp e-motor that drives the front wheels. The set-up delivers a range of up to 223 miles, 0-62mph takes 10.6 seconds, and top speed is 93mph. Meanwhile the 85kW maximum charging speed allows for a 10-80 per cent top-up in 30 minutes.

An energy saving heat pump is included as standard, and helps to preserve range in the colder months. Add the optional Tech Pack (£500) and the Inster Cross gets vehicle-to-load (V2L) charging capabilities, meaning you can use the Inster’s main battery to power other electronic devices via a three-pin plug inside the car.
