Ford’s BlueCruise autonomous driving technology has finally reached the company’s hybrid family SUV, in the form of the aptly named Ford Kuga BlueCruise Edition.

Available to order now starting from £41,995, the Kuga BlueCruise Edition is offered in both full and plug-in hybrid forms. Full-hybrid models output either 178bhp or 181bhp, depending on whether you choose the front or four-wheel-drive model, and return around 50mpg. The plug-in hybrid starts from £42,965, produces 240bhp and, according to Ford, will do more than 40 miles on electric power alone.

Playing into the name of Ford’s own semi-autonomous driving software, the Kuga BlueCruise Edition comes adorned in Vapour Blue paintwork as standard; Magnetic (Black) and Solar Silver are available for £800. BlueCruise Edition models also get 19-inch black alloy wheels, which can be upgraded to 20-inch designs as an option, while the interior features part-leather seats with ribbed blue cloth centres.

It’s the BlueCruise technology that’s perhaps the biggest draw, though. Using a new camera mounted behind the steering wheel, BlueCruise offers a “hands-off, eyes-on” semi-autonomous driving experience. Building on a combination of radars, cameras and the adaptive cruise control, it can manage the steering, acceleration, braking and lane positioning on certain sections of UK and European motorways.

These so-called ‘Blue Zones’ have been mapped out by Ford itself and account for 95 per cent of the UK’s motorway network, and a total of 84,000 miles of road across 16 countries in Europe. BlueCruise is the only Level 2+ autonomous driving software homologated for use on British roads so far.

Ford tells Auto Express that BlueCruise may come to other Kuga models down the line; for now it’s restricted to special editions of the Kuga, as well as the Ford Puma. The Ford Mustang Mach-E has boasted BlueCruise technology since 2023, while the Ford Range pick-up truck is expected to receive it sometime in 2026.
