Shelby Baja 700 is a Ford F-150 Raptor with extra bonkers

Shelby's even faster version of Ford's ultimate American pick-up gets performance mods to produce nearly 700bhp

Although it's been on sale over in the US for five years now, the rough-and-tough Ford F-150 SVT Raptor is still one of the fastest and most capable pick-up trucks on the market. But it seems 411bhp from a 6.2-litre V8 isn't enough for some, so iconic tuning firm Shelby is on hand to satisfy those after something more unhinged.

As the name suggests, the Shelby Baja 700 performance pick-up gets a faintly ridiculous 700hp thanks to a beefier 2.9-litre supercharger and a new throttle body, injectors, heat exchanger and a new exhaust system built by Borla. Those additions promise to turn an already loud and overbearing pick-up into a downright anti-social one.

Given that horsepower figure is more than twice that of the Ford F150 Raptor model equipped with a 5.4-litre V8 we tested in 2010, it should offer a 0-62mph time approaching the magic five-second mark. The top speed will likely be limited by aerodynamics and tyres but this thing will still give most sports cars a serious fright.

But the Shelby Baja 700 isn't purely about straight-line pace, as Carroll Shelby's engineers have reworked the chassis to make it even more unstoppable off-road. Three-inch King coilovers, racing shocks and bushes, and specialist off-road tyres should ensure the Baja handles as well as it shifts.

The downside? The Baja 700 costs around twice as much as the standard model, at $90,000. That's around £60,000 for a pick-up but the problems don't stop there as only 50 examples will be sold over in the States. That means you're highly unlikely to see a tuned Raptor tearing past your local village Post Office any time soon.
