Fiat 500e now one of the cheapest EVs on sale as brand slashes prices across its range

Fiat has cut up to £4,000 off the price of its EVs, including the hot Abarth versions

Fiat 500e - front cornering

The Fiat 500e is now one of the cheapest electric cars on sale in the UK after the Italian brand started the new year by slashing up to £4,040 off the prices of nearly its entire range of EVs, including Abarth’s zero-emissions hot hatches

These price reductions supersede the Fiat E-Grant that was reintroduced last year in response to the Government’s Electric Car Grant (ECG), which countered the fact that none of firm’s EVs are eligible for the grant, while many rivals are.

The almost six-year-old (but still rather chic) 500e received the biggest price cut, and is now available to order from £20,995. So it’s still not quite as cheap as the Citroen e-C3 or BYD Dolphin Surf, but does manage to undercut the Renault 5 and new Nissan Micra, if only by a few hundred pounds after the ECG has been applied.

If your budget still can’t quite stretch that far, there are dozens of used examples of the Fiat 500e available through the Auto Express Buy A Car service which start from just over £12,000.

Meanwhile the Fiat 600e now starts from £26,750 following a £3,285 price cut, which takes the electric version to price parity with the equally powerful hybrid. Unfortunately it’s still not as affordable as key rivals like the Renault 4 or Ford Puma Gen-E, which start from £23,445 and £26,245, respectively, after the ECG.

The Abarth 500e and Abarth 600e have also received nearly £3,000 price reductions, and their starting prices dropping to £27,995 and £33,995, respectively. Once again, compared to rivals, the Alpine A290 starts from just over £30k, but the Cupra Born starts from around £34k (again, after ECG).

These price reductions come as Fiat prepares for the long-awaited arrival of the new Grande Panda – the reigning Auto Express Supermini of the Year – in the spring. The new Fiat 500 Hybrid is arriving this summer too, and while it should be among the cheapest cars on sale, it will also be one of the slowest, needing more than 16 seconds to reach 62mph.
